Construction on the CityLine has begun
The first phase of CityLine (Borgarlína) construction near RU began last week.
Construction is currently taking place on Nauthólsvegur and has already had minor effects on traffic and access to RU. Due to roadworks, the speed limit on Nauthólsvegur has been reduced to 30 km/h.
The pedestrian path along Nauthólsvegur, from the student housing to RU, has also been temporarily closed due to the construction. Pedestrians will therefore need to take a detour through Öskjuhlíð when travelling to and from RU.
The first phase of construction will continue until autumn 2027. During this phase, two new lanes for Borgarlína buses will be added to Nauthólsvegur. Facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will also be improved, with additional walking and cycling paths as well as new lighting.
Despite the construction, the number of lanes for general vehicle traffic will remain the same throughout the construction period. The number of parking spaces at RU will also remain unchanged during the first phase of construction.
The Reykjavík University Student Association (SFHR) is maintaining an active and constructive dialogue with those responsible for the Borgarlína project and Reykjavík University regarding the construction. SFHR will continue to emphasise the importance of keeping disruption and other negative impacts on RU students to a minimum.

At the same time, we strongly emphasise the importance of keeping disruption caused by the construction to a minimum and ensuring that Borgarlína does not negatively affect students who choose to use other modes of transport, for example through a reduction in parking spaces,” says Rúnar Gauti Gunnarsson, President of SFHR.
