Two Eventful Weeks Ahead at RU
The next two weeks will be eventful at Reykjavík University, with mental well-being, charity, solidarity and sustainability taking centre stage. Upcoming events include the opening of Yellow September, Jersey Day, SFHR Charity Week, RU Sustainability Day and Yellow Day.
The next two weeks will be eventful at Reykjavík University, with mental well-being, charity, solidarity and sustainability taking centre stage. Upcoming events include the opening of Yellow September, Jersey Day, SFHR Charity Week, RU Sustainability Day and Yellow Day.
The main event of this period is SFHR Charity Week, taking place from 7–11 September. Throughout the week, students, staff, member associations and SFHR committees will raise funds for the Píeta organisation.
Tuesday, 1 September – Opening of Yellow September
Yellow September will officially begin at Reykjavík University on Tuesday, 1 September at 14:00. This year’s campaign places a particular emphasis on young people, mental well-being, prevention and the importance of ensuring that no one has to face difficult times alone.
The programme will include speeches from RU’s Deputy Rector, Minister of Health Alma Möller, a representative of Píeta and the President of SFHR. The speakers will address mental well-being from a student perspective, the importance of community and the support services available to students at RU.
A choir will also premiere a new song connected to Yellow September and Píeta’s work. RU students and staff are encouraged to attend and help begin the month with solidarity and positive messages.
Friday, 4 September – Jersey Day
Jersey Day will take place on Friday, 4 September under the theme “We Are All on the Same Team”. The day is held in support of children with cancer and their families.
Students and staff are encouraged to wear the jersey of a team, club or national side that means something to them. The aim is to fill RU with colour and demonstrate, in a simple but visible way, that when challenges arise, we stand together as one team.
7–11 September – SFHR Charity Week
SFHR Charity Week will take centre stage from 7–11 September. All proceeds raised during the week will go to Píeta, which carries out vital suicide and self-harm prevention work while providing support and counselling to individuals and their loved ones.
Donations will be collected in one shared fund. As the fund reaches specific milestones, students, university leaders and other participants will complete a variety of challenges. Student associations, SFHR committees and individuals across RU will also be able to contribute through their own challenges and activities.
The progress of the fundraiser and the amount remaining until the next challenge can be followed on SFHR’s website, sfhr.is, and through the union’s social media channels. Further details about each day’s programme will also be shared throughout the week.
Charity Week was revived last academic year after a long break. All student associations took part, and together the RU community raised more than ISK 760,000 for Píeta. This year, the aim is to involve even more students, staff members and friends of RU while building on last year’s success.
Wednesday, 9 September – RU Sustainability Day
Reykjavík University’s Sustainability Day will take place on Wednesday, 9 September and will be closely connected to SFHR Charity Week.
The day will begin with a morning exercise session, followed by Disco Soup at lunchtime to raise awareness of food waste and the better use of ingredients. A clothing market featuring a range of participants will also be held in Sólin, giving students an opportunity to give second-hand clothing a new life while supporting a good cause.
A special auction is also planned as part of the day. Proceeds from the clothing market and auction will go to Píeta and contribute directly to the Charity Week fundraiser.
Thursday, 10 September – Yellow Day
Yellow Day will be celebrated at RU on Thursday, 10 September. Students and staff are encouraged to wear yellow and help turn Sólin—and the wider university community—yellow for the day.
The colour yellow represents hope, solidarity and the importance of giving mental well-being and suicide prevention a visible place in our community. Yellow-themed activities will take place in Sólin alongside the continuing SFHR Charity Week fundraiser for Píeta.

Whether students attend the opening event, wear a jersey or something yellow, visit the clothing market, donate to the fundraiser or take part in a challenge, every contribution can make a difference.
